What to measure and compare

Measure the tabletop width and depth in inches and compare its height with the top of your mattress. From your usual lying position, check where a switch, glasses and water can be reached without stretching. Tape out a prospective lamp base and tray on the surface. Read the lamp’s bulb base, maximum permitted wattage and switch location; do not select a bulb by appearance alone.

A practical styling example

For a warm neutral bedroom, pair a cream shade with a wood table and a small ceramic dish. For a darker room, repeat one pale accent in the shade and book cover rather than adding several ornaments. Use a single book as the visual anchor and keep jewelry in the dish. Leave open space around the lamp base instead of styling every inch.

Try the setup before you buy

Try the arrangement for a week before buying a larger table. Keep water away from electrical items and use a stable, suitable surface. Route cords so they are not pinched or pulled across a walking path. Avoid stacking books under an unstable lamp. If storage fills immediately, move occasional-use items elsewhere rather than adding another container.

Before you buy

  • Confirm tabletop and lamp-base dimensions together.
  • Follow bulb, placement and electrical instructions supplied with the lamp.
  • Check furniture stability and any required anchoring instructions.
